Common Questions About Drone Motors

What Motors Are Used in Drones?

Depending on the application and budget, there are two types of motors used in a drone, brushed and brushless

Brushed Motor

A brushed motor is found in most of the budget-friendly racing drones. A brushed DC electric motor has been in use for more than two centuries. It has a rotor in the center (made with copper coils) and a permanent magnet encompassing it.

When the armature is electrocuted, it generates an electromagnetic field, which forces the rotor to move in the clockwise direction.

A brushed motor has always been quite economical to manufacture. However, they have a much shorter lifespan than its counterpart (brushless motor). Even performance-wide, it lags far behind the brushless motor. Hence, high-end drones like DJI Mavic does not come with a coreless motor.

Brushless Motor

What is the primary difference between a brushed and a brushless motor? The internal structure of both types of motors is almost the same, although a brushless motor does not lose power in the form of heat. Also, the efficiency of a brushless motor is 15-20 percent higher than its counterpart.

Generally, brushless motors are used in high-end multirotor, where the torque requirements are quite high. For instance, in aerial photography, a multirotor is expected to be airborne for more than 30 minutes (sometimes even more). In such a scenario, a brushed motor would lose its efficiency due to excessive heating.

However, a brushless motor costs way more and also needs additional components like Electronic Speed Controllers (ESC). On top of that, they also need regular maintenance and repair.

How Do I Choose a Drone Motor?

If you are planning to build your very first multirotor, you should know how to choose the right motor so you can get the desired performance without over or underspending. Before selecting a motor or any other component for your drone, it is crucial to perform a thorough assessment of the weight of the entire unit. The heavier the frame, the lighter should be the components.

Furthermore, it would also benefit if you understood why a motor is used in a drone and how it makes the entire unit fly in the air. If I had to explain it in brief, the rotatory motion of propeller blades is converted into something called “Thrust.” Thrust is used to describe how strongly the motor can push the unit in an upward direction. This is how a motor makes the drone fly.

Along with thrust, you should also consider the torque of a motor before purchasing it for your kit. Torque is the time taken by a motor to reach the desired speed. Higher torque indicates more precision and performance. Torque is measured in pounds-feet.

How Many RPM Motors Do Drones Use?

RPM or revolutions per minute is the unit used to measure the number of turns performed by an object per minute. In the case of an electric DC motor, it indicates the rotational speed of the rotor. So, what terminology is used to describe the rotational speed of a motor?

You might have noticed that the manufacturers do not specify the rotational speed in terms of RPM. It is denoted by something called Constant Velocity or “KV.” Kindly do not confuse KV to Kilovolt (unit to measure current).

How to measure the RPM of a brushless drone motor?

RPM = KV * Volt

Where KV= Constant Velocity as stated on the packaging

and Volt= Battery Capacity.

Enjoy Your New Drone Motor

In a quadcopter, the motor is one of those components that needs maintenance, repair, and replacement. It is advised to keep the motors well-lubricated with good quality synthetic chain lube. Also, when not in use, try to place the quad in a clean and dry place. Moisture would lessen the life of a motor.
For the products mentioned in this post, I would choose Crazepony EMAX RS2205 2300KV for FPV racing. It is upgraded from its previous versions. Also, you get to enjoy its rich and extensive features for an affordable price.

  1. “…Kindly do not confuse KV to Kilovolt (unit to measure current). …” is a typo.
Kilo volt is a unit to measure voltage not current. Current is product of voltage and voltage is difference of el. potentials.
