We Need Your Help: Drones Quilt Project

The US Drones Quilt project is a work of collective art designed to  remind us that often the victims of drone attacks are people like us who are afraid, alone and innocent.
It was inspired by a similar UK quilt and initiated during the April Days of Action 2013.   Activists across the country are doing coordinated actions against militarized drones, targeted assassinations, drone proliferation, use of public monies for drone research, and drone bases in Africa and other nations.  The quilt project will continue after April 2013.

Each square of the quilt is made by someone like you who  puts their name and then the name of a civilian victim on a square of fabric. These are then sewn together to create a quilt panel that can be used in many ways:

  • to raise awareness,
  • for political advocacy,
  • to connect us deeply to the victims of drone warfare and their families,
  • to convert pain into beautiful, activist art.
The quilt restores humanity to those killed or maimed and reminds people that for every single victim of a drone there was a real person with loves, desires and a life.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

1. Contact Leah Bolger at  leahbolger@comcast.net. Leah will give you the name of a person who you will be honoring. There are many anonymous victims too, so some squares will honor the un-named.

2. Cut a square of cotton fabric 10 inches x 10 inches.

3.  Sew, write, embroider or paint your name and the name of someone killed by a drone onto your square. Be as creative as you want! Leave a margin of at least 1/2 inch around the edge for seams.

A New Interactive Drone Visual

This simple visual, created by Pitch Interactive, captures drone strikes along a timeline starting 2004. The creators of the visual give us two different views of the drone strikes: one by the number of attacks each year, and another view that calculates the number of victims per strike. The number of drone strikes each year are symbolized by red spherical explosions that you can control from your own computer.  By clicking on the victims view you can see an expanded view of the actual victims with the total number of attacks and casualties for each month. You would be surprised to see the ratio of civilian casualties to high-level targets at the top. Jon Stewart Teams Up With CODEPINK Against Drones!

I like the president, but if he’s going to claim the right to kill me with a flying robot, don’t I at least deserve to know why?

Last week, we did a segment on The Daily Show about President Obama’s refusal to release the classified memos justifying his use of killer drones. Now, I’ve always said that I’m a comedian, even after my role in Big Daddy. But this story got me thinking a little more seriously.

Then I got a call from my friend Medea Benjamin, cofounder of CODEPINK. She saw that my correspondent Aasif Mandvi had the memos and wanted us to release them. But ever since he read them, Aasif’s been too scared to come out from under his desk. So Medea asked me to join her in demanding that Congress do something. Naturally, I said no. I’m a comedian, not an activist. But then she said I could have one of the giant vaginas she sometimes wears and I said “absolutely.” As a virile man, I’d do anything for a vagina.

So join me in calling on Patrick Leahy – the big, bald-headed Democrat who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee – to get his hands on those drone memos. If he does, he’ll be doing a public service. And he can have my vagina.

Layout 1APRIL DAYS OF ACTION 2013 – A National Uprising to Stop Drone Spying and Killing

CODEPINK and other national and local groups have joined to form the Network for Stopping Drone Spying and Warfare and are organizing April Days of Action 2013 to generate a public uprising across the United States to stop drone spying and drone warfare.

We urge you to select one or more of the days in April listed below to organize actions in your community to focus on drone-related activities where you live.   The national coordinator for each set of days is listed.  Please be in touch with that person to ask questions and to let them know the days on which you will focus.

April 4 – 6: Drone Manufacturing

Organizers around the country are encouraged to identify drone manufacturing facilities in their regions and organize demonstrations, teach-ins and other actions calling for an end to drone attacks and an end to the manufacture of weaponized and surveillance drones.  Coordinator – Joe Scarry – jtscarry@yahoo.com

On Thursday, 24 January 2013, the United Nations opened an inquiry into the “civilian impact of the use of drones and other forms of targeted killing.” Data – data about casualties, targets, frequency, and other topics – will play an important role in this investigation, led by UN special rapporteur for human rights and counterterrorism.

Visualization can add important context to help the public follow this inquiry. This site was created to visualize one particular drone strike database, maintained by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

Methodology
To get a better idea of the differences between the Bureau of Investigative Journalism’s dataset, New America’s and the Long War Journal’s, see pages 43-44 of Living With Drones. The Bureau’s data is sourced from local and international news accounts of the strikes; field investigations into possible civilian deaths, and credible researcher and lawyer fieldwork examining FATA-area drone strikes.
